History of Temecula

Although many of the wineries in Temecula are relatively new, the Temecula Valley has been occupied for hundreds of years. Prior to the Spanish Missionaries of the 1800's, Temecula Valley was home to Native Americans primarily from the Pechanga Band of Luiseño Indians.

Temecula Valley started experiencing substantial growth starting in the 1960's when Kaiser Development Company purchased a large portion of the valley. Temecula Vineyards had been planted throughout the years but the first Temecula Wineries didn't start appearing until the mid 1970s.

Once the 1-15 freeway was completed connecting inland Los Angeles and San Diego in the 1990's, Temecula Valley experienced heavy growth and many wineries began opening at this point.
